4.22.14 The Garlin and Schwartz Experiment As you may have noticed by now, I am an ardent fan of Ben Schwartz. I think he is one of the funniest improvisers I have ever seen perform, and I am hoping that he continues to get more work in TV and film as well. The same cannot be said for my feelings on Jeff Garlin. He can be funny at times, but I generally find him abrasive. I would have never predicted this pairing for an improv show, but it popped up on the schedule for April.
So I bought tickets and hoped for the best. What resulted was a somewhat funny and interesting hour, though Garlin’s disregard for a lot of improv rules detracted from the experience. I am quite sure a lot of the audience really enjoyed it, and to be honest, I’d watch Ben improvise with nearly anyone. The Middleditch & Schwartz shows have been amazing, Hot Sauce is my favorite show at UCB, and Snowpants is always fantastic. But I’m hopeful he’ll pick someone other than Jeff Garlin for a two-man show next time.
